Learn how to compare offers for accident-damaged vehicles in South Africa. See tips on what affects your payout, paperwork, and finding the right buyer.
If you own a vehicle that's been in an accident and need to sell it quickly and easily in South Africa, you'll likely receive several types of offers-ranging from private buyers and salvage yards, to professional damaged car buying services. It pays to know how to compare these offers transparently, so you can choose the best fit for your needs, location, and the true condition of your car.
Note: The value of an accident-damaged car depends on severity of damage, market demand, age/model, repair costs, paperwork status, and ease of transfer-factors which vary by service and region in South Africa.
Deciding whether to repair or sell your accident-damaged car often comes down to cost vs value: Will repairs bring it back above market value, or is there too much risk? Here's a simple table showing how typical repairs stack up against retained vehicle value in South Africa:
| Damage Severity | Estimated Repair Cost (R) | % Value Retained After Repair |
|---|---|---|
| Minor Panel Damage | 5,000-15,000 | 85-90% |
| Moderate Structural | 30,000-60,000 | 65-75% |
| Severe/Write-Off | 70,000+ | 50% or less |
If repair costs approach or exceed the vehicle's market value, selling to a damage specialist is usually the practical route.
| Buyer Type | Typical Offer Includes | SA Region Coverage | Paid When | Trusted Service? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Specialist Car Buyer | Cash offer, free collection, paperwork handled | Nationwide | On/after pick-up | Yes (if transparent & reviewed) |
| Salvage Yard | Offer may exclude towing/admin | Main metros only | On delivery | Varies |
| Private Buyer | Typically lowest offer, no paperwork/towing | Local only | After transfer | Low, watch for scams |
After selecting the best offer, the buyer typically schedules collection-often within 24-72 hours. A specialist service arranges free towing, manages all necessary paperwork (including deregistration at your local licensing office), and releases payment at or shortly after collection. Always verify proof of payment before finalising transfer. If your car is under finance or still registered as written-off, you may need settlement/discharge documents.
* Free nationwide towing is a major value-add, saving you R2,000-R5,000 in typical metro towing fees.
* Deregistration and legal transfer are essential-ask your buyer if they handle this upfront (learn about the paperwork).
* Always check recent customer reviews for trust and transparency.
