Learn how to compare cash-for-scrap offers in South Africa: what affects valuations, questions to ask, paperwork and tips to get a fair, transparent deal.
Compare Total Value
Look beyond the headline price to include towing and paperwork support.
Know What Affects Offers
Damage type, usable parts and location all influence valuations.
Confirm Legal Handling
Ensure deregistration and finance settlements are managed clearly.
If you’re looking to compare cash for scrap cars South Africa-wide, this guide explains the key differences between buyers, how offers are calculated, and practical steps to get a competitive cash offer with minimal fuss. Whether the vehicle is accident-damaged, non-running, flood-affected or written-off, understanding how to compare offers helps you avoid low bids and unnecessary delays.
Not all cash-for-scrap services use the same criteria. Some focus on salvageable parts, others on scrap metal weight, and others factor in logistics and paperwork support. Comparing offers helps you evaluate total value, not just the headline number-including towing, paperwork help, deregistration support and speed of payment.
Quick tip: A higher headline offer doesn’t always mean a better deal if towing or admin fees are deducted. Confirm inclusions before accepting.
| Estimated repair cost (R) | Typical value retained (%) | When to consider selling |
|---|---|---|
| R5,000 - R15,000 | 60-80% | Minor repairs; private sale or repair may be viable |
| R15,000 - R40,000 | 30-60% | Major repairs; compare repair cost vs cash-for-scrap offers |
| R40,000+ | 10-30% | Often better to sell as salvage or to a cash buyer |
| Damage type | Typical impact on offer |
|---|---|
| Cosmetic (bumper, lights) | Low impact; parts resale good if popular model |
| Structural/frame damage | High negative impact; often sold for parts or scrap |
| Flood or water damage | Significantly reduced offers due to electrical/system risks |
| Fire damage | Severe reduction; often sold for metal salvage |
When you’re ready to check specific offers, compare at least three buyers and request written details of what’s included: towing, paperwork handling, deregistration assistance and payment timing. For more on what we buy and the service we provide, see our Sell Damaged Cars page and our How it works overview for South Africa.
Deciding whether to repair or sell depends on repair estimates, the vehicle’s market value, and how quickly you need cash. If repair costs approach or exceed the vehicle’s resale value, or if the car is non-running and accruing storage fees, comparing cash-for-scrap offers is usually the more practical choice.
A transparent buyer will outline each step: submit vehicle details and photos, receive a clear offer, accept or decline, then schedule free towing and paperwork completion. Sell Your Damaged Car follows an online-first workflow so you can upload vehicle details and get an offer quickly. For non-running vehicles, check our dedicated guidance at Sell Non-Running Car.
Make sure the buyer handles deregistration or provides clear instructions. Vehicles under finance require disclosure and coordination with the lender; the buyer should be able to explain how settlement and title transfer will be managed. Confirm who pays for any clearance documents and that the buyer issues a written receipt at transfer.
After you accept an offer, a trusted buyer will collect the vehicle (nationwide in South Africa), complete transfer paperwork or deregistration steps and release payment as agreed. Expect to receive a collection confirmation and a final receipt. If any issues arise, request contact details for the collections team and the paperwork handler.
Example steps when comparing offers: 1) get three written offers including towing and admin terms; 2) confirm payment timing; 3) ask how finance settlements are handled; 4) choose the offer with the clearest inclusions and fastest payment. Keep bank details ready and ensure you receive a signed transfer/release document at collection.
South Africa note: Free towing and paperwork support are common differentiators for nationwide buyers. Confirm collection coverage for Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban or more remote areas before accepting.
Comparing cash-for-scrap offers in South Africa is about more than a single number-it’s understanding inclusions, legal handling and logistics. Use the checklist above to compare offers fairly and choose a buyer whose service terms match your priorities for speed, clarity and low hassle.
