Answers to frequently asked questions about selling storm-damaged cars in South Africa - valuation, repair vs sell, paperwork, finance and free towing explained.
When to Sell vs Repair
If repair costs are a large share of value, selling may be faster and more practical.
SA-Specific Paperwork
We explain deregistration, finance settlements and insurer write-off implications.
Streamlined Nationwide Process
Online valuation, free towing and handled paperwork make selling easier across SA.
Storm-damaged cars raise specific concerns for owners: hail dents, roof or windscreen damage, water intrusion, or structural issues after severe weather. This guide answers common questions about selling storm-damaged cars in South Africa, explains when selling makes more sense than repairing, and outlines how a specialist buyer can simplify the process with free towing, paperwork assistance and fast payment.
Whether to sell depends on repair cost, the vehicle's pre-storm market value and the likely time and hassle of repairing. For many owners in Johannesburg, Cape Town or Durban, even moderate storm damage can lead to lengthy repair timelines and hidden issues such as electrical faults or corrosion. A specialist buyer who purchases cars in any condition can be a practical alternative.
Selling is often preferable when estimated repairs are a significant portion of the vehicle's market value, or when the car is non-running or under insurance write-off consideration. If you want to understand how our process works, read more on our About / How it works page.
| Repair type | Typical repair cost (R, estimate) | Value retained after repair (estimate) |
|---|---|---|
| Minor hail & cosmetic panel dents | R2,000 - R15,000 | 70-90% of pre-storm market value |
| Windscreen replacement / glass | R1,500 - R8,000 | 80-95% (depending on other damage) |
| Water intrusion / interior / electrics | R10,000 - R60,000+ | 40-75% (varies with severity) |
| Structural/frame damage | R20,000 - R100,000+ | Often below 50%, may be classed as write-off |
Figures above are illustrative South Africa estimates and will vary by make, model and region. They are not indicative of what a buyer will pay; they show typical repair ranges to help decide whether to proceed with repairs or sell. For more on selling damaged vehicles, see our Sell Damaged Cars page.
| Damage type | Typical impact on offers |
|---|---|
| Surface hail dents and paint damage | Low to moderate negative impact; often repairable at modest cost |
| Windscreen / glass breakage | Moderate impact; glass replacement is common and usually straightforward |
| Flooding / water ingress | High impact; electrical and corrosion risk reduces market value significantly |
| Structural / roof collapse | Very high impact; may be classified as write-off by insurers |
If your vehicle is non-running after a storm, review our guidance on selling non-running cars at the Sell Non-Running Car page to compare options.
Specialist buyers streamline each step: online valuation, clear offer, acceptance, free towing and paperwork handling. For many South African owners the key benefits are speed and reduced admin - especially when insurance settlements are slow or repairs are uncertain.
Key documentation and legal points to check:
After the vehicle is collected, the buyer finalises admin and arranges payment. Depending on the buyer's business model, cars may be processed for parts, salvage resale, or repair for secondary markets. For details on the streamlined process used by specialist buyers and how paperwork is handled, visit our homepage which explains free towing and payment steps nationwide.
These sources provide background on vehicle paperwork and safety considerations in South Africa. For an immediate assessment of a storm-damaged car, use the specialist buyer pages referenced earlier to upload photos and details and receive an obligation-free assessment.
