What documents do I need to sell my damaged car?

You will normally need the vehicle registration certificate (logbook), your South African ID or passport, and proof of ownership. If the logbook is missing you can provide a sworn affidavit and Sell Your Damaged Car will guide you through replacement documentation.

My car still has a finance bond or outstanding loan - can you buy it?

Sell Your Damaged Car can purchase vehicles with outstanding finance, but the bond holder must be settled before ownership can transfer. We can obtain settlement figures and coordinate payment to the lender as part of the sale process.

How do you handle transfer of ownership and deregistration for non-running or written-off vehicles?

We prepare and submit the required transfer forms, collect the necessary signatures, and lodge paperwork with the relevant licensing authority (eNaTIS or municipal licensing office) to complete transfer and, where applicable, deregistration. You will receive written confirmation of the transfer and payment once the process is complete.

Are there tax or VAT obligations I should be aware of when selling my damaged car?

Private sellers are generally not required to charge VAT on a single private vehicle sale, but businesses or VAT-registered sellers must account for VAT. For income tax or capital gains considerations, consult a tax advisor for advice specific to your circumstances.

What happens if my car is part of an insurance claim or a police case?

If the vehicle is subject to an insurance claim or police investigation we will require written clearance from the insurer or police before transfer can proceed. Disclose any open claims or cases up-front so we can advise on the documents needed to lawfully complete the sale.

Overview: Cancelling Car Insurance in Johannesburg

Cancelling your car insurance in Johannesburg is often a necessary step if you've sold, scrapped, or written off your vehicle, or if you're switching insurers. Whether your car has been damaged, written-off, or is no longer in use, understanding the cancellation process can help you avoid unexpected charges and ensure your paperwork stays in order. South African insurers have specific requirements, and Johannesburg motorists should be aware of timelines, proof of sale or deregistration, and their rights on pro-rata refunds.

When Should You Cancel Your Car Insurance?

You've sold or traded in your car (including damaged or non-running vehicles).
Your car is written-off or scrapped following an accident.
You're switching to a new insurer for better cover or price.
The vehicle is permanently off the road (deregistered with Gauteng licensing).

Tip: Always get written confirmation of your insurance cancellation to protect yourself against future deductions and disputes.

Step-by-Step Guide: Cancelling Insurance in Johannesburg

Contact your insurer to request cancellation. Most major South African insurers allow cancellation via phone, email, or their online portal.
Supply proof of sale, change of ownership, or vehicle deregistration if requested. This is especially relevant if your car was sold, written off, or scrapped.
Check your policy for notice period requirements. Notice periods range from immediate cancellation up to 30 days, depending on your contract.
Request pro-rata premium refunds if you've paid in advance. Some insurers will return a portion of your unused premium.
Ensure your debit order stops and get written confirmation of policy termination.

Step	Typical Johannesburg Requirement
Notice Period	7-30 days (may vary by insurer)
Supporting Documents	Proof of sale, deregistration, claim documents (if written-off)
Refund Policy	Pro-rata refund if premium paid in advance

Johannesburg residents should note that cancelling insurance on a financed vehicle usually requires the settlement or transfer of loan obligations. If your car is written off or sold to a service like Sell Your Damaged Car, share the release or settlement letter with your insurer for seamless processing.

Legal and Administrative Considerations

South African law does not require car insurance, but you must inform your insurer immediately of changes to ownership or the status of your vehicle. If your vehicle is scrapped, written off, or deregistered in Johannesburg, update the eNaTIS and Gauteng licensing system to avoid liability. Cancel your insurance after your vehicle is off your name to prevent future claims against you.

What If Your Vehicle Was Damaged or Written Off?

If a claim results in a write-off, insurers in Johannesburg typically cancel cover automatically, but always confirm in writing.
Submit the Salvage Retention Certificate or insurer's notice to cancel any remaining coverage.
For vehicles sold to salvage or specialist buyers, keep proof of transfer and inform all relevant parties.

Scenario	Required Action	Insurance Impact
Car Sold (Roadworthy or Damaged)	Provide proof of sale to insurer	Coverage can end after notice period
Accident Write-Off	Insurer handles claim & cancels policy	Policy usually ends after payout
Scrapped/Deregistered	Submit deregistration documents	Notify insurer for policy cessation

Did You Know? Johannesburg drivers who rely on public transport or no longer use their vehicles should consider cancelling car insurance to avoid unnecessary premiums, but must ensure full deregistration to prevent future liability on the eNaTIS system.

Practical Tips to Make the Process Smooth

Submit cancellation in writing and keep a digital record.
Ensure last debit order clears before the next billing cycle.
Ask for a cancellation reference number for future proof.
If switching insurers, align start and end dates to avoid cover gaps.
