A written-off car, also known locally as a statutory write-off or salvage, is typically deregistered for scrap and recorded on the eNaTIS system. However, depending on the type and severity of write-off, you may in some cases restore, inspect, and legally re-register that car for road use. This process involves compulsory inspections, deregistration and reregistration actions, and strict compliance with structural and roadworthy regulations set by the National Road Traffic Act.

If your car is classified as Code 3 (Rebuilt), it's possible to apply for re-registration to return it to South African roads. Code 4 vehicles cannot be re-registered and may only be sold as parts.
Importantly, re-registration isn't guaranteed. Every rebuilt Code 3 vehicle must undergo an SAPS vehicle clearance as well as a full roadworthy and structural exam at a registered test centre. Attempting to road-register a Code 4 car is illegal in South Africa.
