Need to sell a car without the NaTIS (registration certificate) in South Africa? Discover what's possible, legal requirements, and how to complete the sale hassle-free.
In South Africa, the car registration certificate (commonly called the NaTIS document or "logbook") proves that you are the lawful owner of a vehicle. It's an official document issued by the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) containing vital details like the VIN, engine number, and record of previous owners. If your car is accident-damaged, non-running, or written off, proper paperwork is still essential to transfer or deregister ownership legally.
Selling a car without the original registration certificate is a legally grey area. The National Road Traffic Act requires that every transfer of ownership includes the NaTIS document. This protects both the buyer and seller from disputes and fraudulent sales. However, there are some circumstances where you may still be able to proceed, with extra steps or supporting paperwork.
| Situation | What's Required | Possible Solutions |
|---|---|---|
| Lost/damaged NaTIS | Affidavit, proof of ownership, ID | Apply for duplicate at licensing office |
| Vehicle under finance | Settlement letter, finance release | Finance company provides paperwork after settlement |
| Written-off status | Claim payout and notification to licensing office | Update NaTIS status before sale |
Once your damaged or non-running car has been collected, the professional buyer is responsible for ensuring deregistration at the local licensing department. You should be notified of the completed paperwork, protecting you from future liability (such as traffic fines or e-tolls linked to the old vehicle). For cars with complicated paper trails (finance, deceased estate, written-off), expect follow-up confirmation from the service provider, ensuring your name is cleared from the NaTIS system.
| Scenario | Can Sell? | Extra Steps Needed |
|---|---|---|
| Original NaTIS present | Yes (straightforward) | Standard process |
| NaTIS lost/damaged | Yes* | Obtain duplicate, affidavit required |
| Car under finance | Yes* | Title released after settlement |
| Estate/inheritance | Yes* | Executor's support, extra documentation |
| No paperwork at all | Usually no | Contact buyer for advice, resolve at licensing office |
*Extra admin, affidavits or delays may apply, but sale is often possible with help from a trusted service.
