Learn if you can sell a non-running salvage car in South Africa, the paperwork required, how offers are calculated and tips to get a competitive cash offer.
Yes - You Can Sell It
Non-running salvage cars are commonly bought by specialist buyers and dismantlers.
Check Paperwork & Finance
Confirm title, outstanding finance and who handles deregistration before accepting.
Free Towing & Fast Payment
Many buyers offer nationwide free towing, paperwork handling and quick payment.
If your vehicle is non-running and classified as salvage or written off, selling it is possible and common in South Africa. Buyers range from salvage yards and dismantlers to specialist cash buyers who handle collection, paperwork and payment. Whether selling is the best option depends on repair costs, remaining market value and legal factors like outstanding finance and deregistration requirements.
Selling a non-running salvage car can free you from storage costs, reduce risk of further deterioration, and convert an otherwise idle asset into a competitive cash offer. If you want to compare your options in detail, our explanation of how the service works is available on the About / How it works page.
Deciding whether to repair or sell depends on three practical factors: estimated repair cost, current market value if repaired, and the time and hassle involved. For many owners, especially when a car is written off by insurers or requires major structural repairs, selling is quicker and lower risk.
| Scenario | Typical outcome | When selling makes sense |
|---|---|---|
| Repair cost > 60% of repaired market value | Low financial upside after repair | Usually sell - avoid sunk repair expenses |
| Cosmetic damage with mechanical intact | Repairable at moderate cost | Repair may be worthwhile if resale value is high |
| Non-running with unknown mechanical failures | High uncertainty, potential large costs | Selling to a specialist is often preferred |
Buyers price salvage vehicles based on repair complexity, parts value and scrap demand. The following table summarises common damage categories and typical impact on offers (illustrative).
| Damage type | Typical offer impact | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Mechanical failure (non-running) | Moderate to significant reduction | Depends on engine/transmission condition and parts demand |
| Structural/Frame damage | Large reduction | Often classed as write-off; affects resale and repairability |
| Cosmetic (panels, glass) | Smaller reduction | Higher offers if drivetrain intact |
If you want to list a non-running vehicle and see how our valuation compares, start from the Sell Non-Running Car resource for details on required photos and information: Sell Non-Running Car.
Specialist buyers typically follow a simple sequence: you submit vehicle details and photos, receive an obligation-free offer, accept if satisfied, and the buyer arranges free towing, completes paperwork and pays you. A reliable buyer will explain how deregistration and transfer work in South Africa and confirm any requirements when a vehicle is under finance.
Key legal points to confirm before selling: who holds the title, whether the car is financed, and if it is recorded as written off by an insurer. If the vehicle has outstanding finance, you must disclose this - the lender’s consent or settlement will be required to transfer ownership. Deregistration is often part of the buyer’s service, but you should get written confirmation of who handles the process.
For guidance on how buyers handle admin and collection nationwide, see our Sell Damaged Cars information that explains the service inclusions and typical timelines: Sell Damaged Cars.
After collection the buyer typically completes the paperwork (including deregistration where applicable), processes payment and either recycles the vehicle, parts it out, or (rarely) repairs it for resale. Payment timelines vary but many specialist buyers release funds promptly after collection and paperwork verification. If you want to verify a buyer’s process or timeline, check their company details on the homepage and request written confirmation: Sell Your Damaged Car homepage.
Storage and transport costs in metro areas can add up; selling to a buyer that includes free nationwide towing (Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban and surrounds) avoids those fees. Typical salvage buyers assess offers in relation to local parts demand and scrap metal prices. Example: if a non-running vehicle would require an estimated R40,000 in repairs to be roadworthy but the repaired market value is R55,000, many owners favour selling instead of spending time and money on uncertain repairs (figures are illustrative estimates and will vary by make, model and region).
