Learn how storm damage affects scrap car price per kg in Bloemfontein, what factors reduce per-kg payouts, and practical steps to get a fair valuation.
What affects per-kg prices
Metal rates, contamination, dismantling costs and parts salvageability influence offers.
Compare scrap vs salvage
Per-kg scrap estimates are a starting point; salvage or parts sales can pay more.
Practical next steps
Document damage, get multiple quotes and confirm paperwork and deregistration.
If a storm has damaged your vehicle in Bloemfontein you may be wondering about the scrap car price per kg for storm damage. Prices for scrap metal and salvage vehicles fluctuate with local scrap-metal markets, the weight of recoverable metal, and the condition of non-metal components. This guide explains the key factors that affect the per-kg scrap valuation in Bloemfontein, how storm-specific damage changes offers, and practical next steps for selling a storm-damaged vehicle.
Scrap buyers typically estimate a vehicle's weight in kilograms and multiply by a per-kg rate for recyclable metal (steel, iron, aluminium). For storm-damaged cars, assessors also deduct value for contaminated materials (mud, water), parts that cannot be recycled (airbags, fluids), and the cost of safe dismantling. Remember that the "scrap car price per kg" is not the same as a salvage offer that includes working parts or vehicles that can be resold; salvage buyers will price differently.
| Scenario | Estimated repair cost (R) | Likely retained market value after repair (R) | When to consider selling as scrap |
|---|---|---|---|
| Minor hail/roof dents | R6,000 - R15,000 (estimate) | R40,000 - R120,000 (depends on model) | Repair if sentimental or high resale value; otherwise consider salvage/parts sale |
| Flooded / water ingress | R30,000+ (electrical & interior work) | Often substantially reduced - many buyers avoid rebuilt flood cars | Frequently better to sell as salvage/scrap |
| Totalled by wind/impact | R50,000+ (structural repairs) | Low - structural repairs rarely recoup cost | Scrap or salvage sale usually preferable |
| Damage type | Effect on per-kg scrap valuation |
|---|---|
| Surface dents, cosmetic damage | Minimal impact on metal weight; higher chance of part resale |
| Flood and mud contamination | Significant deductions for cleaning/disposal; reduces per-kg payout |
| Heavy structural damage | May reduce recoverable metal and require on-site dismantling costs |
For a local valuation and an estimate tailored to Bloemfontein conditions, many owners use a combined approach: compare scrap-per-kg estimates with salvage offers that include reusable parts. For more detail on selling damaged vehicles and how offers are made, see the Sell Damaged Cars page and our process overview on the homepage.
Storm-related events - heavy hail, falling trees, flooding - can change a vehicle’s economics quickly. If repair estimates approach or exceed the car’s post-repair market value, the scrap route becomes more practical. In Bloemfontein, factor in towing from rural areas, removal of contaminated materials, and possible deregistration costs when comparing offers.
When you sell a storm-damaged or scrapped car in South Africa, clear transfer of ownership and deregistration are important. If the vehicle is under finance, inform the finance house - funds may need to settle the outstanding balance before deregistration. Many professional buyers handle paperwork and deregistration for you; for details on the process and what to expect, review our How it works / About page and the Sell Non-Running Car guidance for non-starters.
A typical sequence after acceptance: the buyer confirms the offer, arranges collection or towing, completes transfer paperwork and pays you. In South Africa you should receive written confirmation of transfer and payment. Where applicable, ensure finance settlements are handled and request a deregistration receipt when the buyer completes the process.
If a midsize car weighs 1,300 kg and a local scrap rate is R3.50/kg for recoverable metal, the gross scrap value might be ~R4,550 before deductions. Storm contamination, fluids, airbag disposal and dismantling can reduce the net payout substantially; always treat such per-kg figures as starting estimates.
Notes: figures in this guide are illustrative and presented in South African rand (R). Scrap rates and final offers depend on local market conditions in Bloemfontein, vehicle make/model, and the severity of storm damage. For a precise valuation tailored to your vehicle, gather photos and specifications and request a written quote from a professional buyer.
