Practical guide for Durban owners: decide whether to repair or sell, understand SA paperwork, and prepare photos and documents to get a competitive cash offer.
Sell Where Logistics Are Handled
Choose buyers who provide free towing and handle deregistration for Durban collections.
Document Everything
Clear photos, VIN and service history improve offer accuracy and speed.
Compare Repair vs Sell
If repair costs near resale value, selling to a specialist may be simpler.
If your vehicle has been declared written-off by an insurer or has severe accident damage, choosing the right route to sell it matters. In Durban and surrounding KwaZulu-Natal areas you can sell privately, to a scrapyard, or to specialist buyers who handle towing and paperwork. Each route affects timing, effort and the final cash you receive. This guide explains the practical steps, legal points in South Africa, and local considerations for Durban owners.
Durban has several salvage and vehicle-recycling hubs, but transport costs and market demand for parts still influence offers. Working with a buyer that offers free towing across KwaZulu-Natal reduces logistics headaches. For a quick overview of the company process and nationwide coverage, see our About Us page.
Deciding whether to repair or sell depends on estimated repair costs, the vehicle's market value before the write-off, and how the car will be used post-repair. For many written-off vehicles, repair costs can exceed the residual market value, or insurers may have flagged structural damage that affects future safety and resale.
| Scenario | Typical repair estimate (R) | Likely value retained |
|---|---|---|
| Minor cosmetic & bumper damage | R5,000 - R20,000 | High (70%+ of pre-accident value) |
| Major structural or chassis repair | R30,000 - R100,000+ | Low (often below repair cost) |
| Engine/transmission loss | R20,000 - R80,000 | Varies (may suit parts market) |
These ranges are indicative for South Africa and should be treated as estimates. If repair estimates approach or exceed likely resale value, selling to a specialist buyer or salvage buyer in Durban is often the more cost-effective option.
Selling to a specialist car buyer streamlines logistics: you submit vehicle details and photos online, receive an offer based on condition and market demand, accept if it meets your expectations, and the buyer handles collection and paperwork. Using a service that provides free towing and handles deregistration reduces the steps you must manage locally in Durban.
Tip: If you still owe on finance, inform the buyer early. Many specialist buyers work with lienholders to settle outstanding balances as part of the transfer process.
For practical examples of the types of vehicles accepted and the online form checklist, review our Sell Damaged Cars page.
When selling a written-off vehicle in South Africa you must follow standard transfer and deregistration procedures. The seller must provide a completed COF (certificate of ownership) where applicable, a signed registration certificate (RC), and a clear sale agreement. Specialist buyers who operate nationwide typically manage these admin steps for you and liaise with local licensing authorities in KwaZulu-Natal.
| Damage type | Typical impact on offers |
|---|---|
| Cosmetic (panels, lights) | Small to moderate reduction; parts resale strong |
| Structural (chassis, frame) | Large reduction; affects roadworthiness and resale |
| Mechanical (engine, gearbox) | Varies; good demand for salvageable components |
| Fire/flood damage | Often major reduction; electrical systems impacted |
Every vehicle is assessed individually. Written-off status alone does not determine the final offer - age, mileage, parts value and current salvage demand in Durban all matter. For owners of non-running or heavily damaged cars, our Sell Non-Running Car resource explains the documentation and photo tips that improve offer accuracy.
After you accept an offer a reputable buyer will arrange collection (many provide free towing), complete the sale paperwork, and transfer payment according to the agreed terms. Keep copies of the signed sale agreement and proof of payment. If deregistration or transfer to a salvage/licensing body is required, confirm the buyer will handle this on your behalf and provide confirmation once complete.
Example scenario: a written-off hatchback in Durban with structural front damage. The fastest route may be a specialist buyer with free towing who values salvageable components. Preparing inspection photos, service history and any insurer documentation can shorten turnaround time and reduce the need for follow-up checks.
For a clearer picture of how offers are calculated and to start the simple submission process, visit our homepage. Working with a buyer who understands Durban logistics and handles towing and deregistration can significantly reduce stress and time to payment.
