Learn the advantages of selling cars with mechanical problems in South Africa - when to sell vs repair, how specialist buyers help, and legal paperwork notes.
Save Time & Money
Avoid large repairs and ongoing storage or insurance costs.
Simple Nationwide Process
Online valuation, free towing and paperwork support across South Africa.
Transparent Offers
Competitive cash offers based on condition, market demand and parts value.
Selling cars with mechanical problems can be a practical, time-saving option for private owners and small fleets. For many South African owners, repairs are costly, parts scarce, or the vehicle is written off by insurers - and holding on to a non-running or troublesome car can add storage, towing and opportunity costs. A specialist buyer that accepts vehicles in any condition, offers free towing and handles paperwork can turn a mechanical headache into cash quickly and with minimal hassle.
Deciding whether to repair or sell depends on the repair estimate, the vehicle's market value, and intended future use. If repair costs approach or exceed a significant portion of the vehicle's resale value, selling is often the more rational choice. For many owners across Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban, quick disposal of a non-running vehicle avoids repeated repair attempts and the logistics of arranging specialised towing.
| Repair cost (estimate) | Typical value retained after repair (estimate) | When selling is usually preferable |
|---|---|---|
| R5,000 - R15,000 | Small to moderate uplift | Repair if long-term use planned and reliable parts available |
| R15,000 - R40,000 | Partial value recovery | Consider selling; compare offers to repair estimates |
| R40,000+ | Limited value uplift for older cars | Selling is often more practical, especially for older vehicles |
Note: Figures above are illustrative estimates for South Africa and will vary by make, model, year and current salvage market conditions.
Specialist buyers for damaged or non-running vehicles reduce friction by offering a simple online valuation, fast payment after collection and free towing across South Africa. For an explanation of the buyer’s process and company background, see the About / How it works page. If your vehicle does not run, detailed guidance is available on the Sell Non-Running Car page, which explains information to prepare before submitting photos and details.
| Mechanical issue | Typical effect on offers | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Engine failure | Significant reduction | Depends on engine type and parts demand |
| Transmission issues | High impact | Manual vs automatic affects salvage demand |
| Electrical faults | Moderate impact | Easier to diagnose; offers vary |
These tables show typical patterns rather than exact valuations. Offers are affected by age, model desirability, parts scarcity and regional salvage demand across South Africa.
Most specialist buyers follow a clear, repeatable flow: submit vehicle details and photos online, receive an initial competitive cash offer, accept or decline, and - if accepted - arrange collection and paperwork. In South Africa the buyer often handles deregistration and transfer formalities. For a focused explanation on selling damaged cars, see the Sell Damaged Cars page.
When selling a vehicle that has mechanical problems, ensure you disclose known faults honestly. Buyers will usually request the vehicle registration certificate and a signed transfer form. If the vehicle is still under finance, inform the buyer; a settlement or arrangement is required before ownership can change. Specialist purchasers often assist with finance settlement steps and deregistration to make the sale straightforward.
After the buyer collects the vehicle (free towing is commonly offered nationwide), the usual steps are final paperwork and payment. Many specialist buyers release payment quickly after collection - sellers should verify bank details and request confirmation of deregistration once completed. For a full company overview and to check process details, review the company homepage.
Example 1: A Johannesburg owner with an automatic car whose gearbox failed. The estimated repair exceeded R40,000; selling to a specialist eliminated repair risk, avoided storage bills and freed funds for a replacement vehicle.
Example 2: A Cape Town small-business fleet manager chose to sell several older non-running units rather than keep repairing them. The streamlined collection and paperwork reduced administrative time and helped refresh the fleet.
Selling cars with mechanical problems is often the pragmatic route when repair costs, time and uncertainty outweigh potential resale gains. Use transparent buyers that provide clear offers, free nationwide towing and assistance with deregistration and finance-related issues. Always compare offers and confirm what the buyer includes in collection and paperwork services.
